For many veterans, the VA home loan program is one of the biggest benefits earned through service, but let’s be real: the paperwork can feel overwhelming. Good news? The VA does not always require a Verification of Employment (VOE) or W-2s. Yep. Sometimes you can qualify with far fewer documents than you think.
Below is a clear breakdown of when the VA allows borrowers to skip these items entirely.
When a VOE Is Not Required
You can avoid providing a VOE if:
- You’ve been with the same employer for at least one year, and
- Lenders have collected one year of W-2 forms from you.
As long as those W-2s verify your income history and everything lines up, the VA is fine without the traditional employment verification.
When W-2 Forms Are Not Required
There are two situations where W-2s can be skipped altogether:
1. You’re Active-Duty Military
Active-duty service members don’t need to provide W-2 documents. Your LES (Leave & Earnings Statement) already covers what the VA needs to calculate stable income.
2. You Meet ALL of the Following Conditions
This is where a lot of veterans can benefit. No W-2s are required if every one of these criteria is met:
- You’ve been with the same employer for more than two years
- A phone call to your employer confirms your tenure and current employment status
- You’re not self-employed or commissioned
- You don’t need bonus income, overtime, or any secondary income to qualify
- Your income can be calculated using base pay only, not total pay
- You sign either Form 8821 or Form 4506 for the previous two tax years
This allows lenders to verify income without having to dig up old W-2s or pay stubs.
